Hacienda San Antonio Millet, an estate nestled in the Yucatán, is more than a destination. It is a living narrative of history, heritage, and hospitality, guided today by owner and general manager Marisa Calderón. For Marisa, stewardship of the hacienda is not just a professional role but a deeply personal calling.
“Twenty-three years ago, my father and one of his brothers decided to acquire Hacienda San Antonio Millet, which at the time was in ruins but carried immense history and charm,” she recalls. “I grew up watching the restoration process, seeing the walls, gardens, and traditions come back to life. That experience deeply shaped me, and today I have the privilege of continuing this legacy. My vision has been to preserve its authenticity while opening its doors to share the magic of the hacienda with guests from all over the world. It’s not just a property; it’s a living space that holds memory, culture, and hospitality at its core.”
Guests often describe the Hacienda as a place where time seems to slow. Marisa sees this as intentional design:
“We strive to create experiences that feel timeless yet comfortable. From the moment guests arrive, they are surrounded by history — centuries-old walls, traditional Yucatecan details, and the quiet beauty of nature. At the same time, we integrate contemporary comforts with intention: private dining with personalized menus, curated tours with local artisans, and wellness experiences that bring calm and renewal. The balance lies in ensuring every guest feels cared for while staying connected to the authenticity of place.”
The weight of centuries sits within the hacienda’s walls, but Marisa views preservation as a privilege, not a burden. “Preservation is at the heart of everything we do. We treat the Hacienda as a cultural treasure — every restoration respects its original character and materials,” she explains. “At the same time, we allow creativity to flourish through thoughtful design and service. For example, we highlight the hacienda’s stories through photography missions, artisanal details, and curated events, while ensuring that the guest experience aligns with today’s expectations of luxury. It’s about weaving the old and the new together so they elevate each other.”

Marisa’s unique vantage point as both founder and general manager means she must balance vision with execution. “One of the greatest lessons has been that hospitality is both an art and a discipline,” she says. “On the business side, rigor is essential: understanding budgets, operations, and long-term sustainability. But true hospitality requires heart — creating moments that touch people and make them feel at home. Balancing both has taught me patience, resilience, and the importance of a strong team who shares the same values.”
Hacienda San Antonio Millet is a proud member of the Boutique Lifestyle Leaders Association (BLLA), a community Marisa describes as vital. “It’s incredibly meaningful to be part of a global community of independent hoteliers. BLLA represents creativity, resilience, and innovation in our industry, and being connected to others who share similar challenges and passions is inspiring. For Hacienda San Antonio Millet, it means amplifying our voice, learning from others, and contributing to a movement that values authenticity and independent spirit.”
Marisa sees Mexico’s boutique hotel industry as thriving but competitive. “Mexico’s boutique hotel landscape is vibrant and diverse. We have an extraordinary cultural and natural heritage to share, and travelers are increasingly looking for meaningful, personalized experiences,” she reflects. “The challenge lies in standing out in a growing market while maintaining authenticity. Independent properties often face limitations in resources compared to large chains, but our strength is in storytelling, personal connection, and the uniqueness of each project.”
When asked what excites her about the Hacienda’s future, Marisa speaks with conviction: “What excites me most is continuing to evolve while staying true to our essence. We are working on partnerships that highlight local artisans and sustainable practices, as well as expanding wellness experiences that integrate nature and tradition. I also see great opportunity in hosting retreats, intimate weddings, and cultural events that allow guests to live the Hacienda in a deeper way. For me, it’s about ensuring that every project honors the past while creating a vibrant future for Hacienda San Antonio Millet.”
